How Long Should an Air Conditioner Last in the San Fernando Valley?

In the San Fernando Valley, we regularly see systems logging 2,500 to 3,000+ run hours between May and October alone. Add shoulder-season use in April and November — which is becoming more common as our summers stretch longer — and a Valley AC unit is doing the work of a system in a milder climate two or three times over.
Realistically, we tell Valley homeowners to plan on 10 to 15 years for a properly installed, properly maintained system. Builder-grade equipment installed cheap during a tract-home renovation or a flip, especially anything installed without permits or with undersized ductwork, often struggles to make it past year 8 or 9. Attic temperatures are the silent factor nobody talks about. In North Hollywood and Van Nuys, where a huge share of homes are single-story with attic-mounted air handlers, that attic space can hit 140-150°F on a summer afternoon. Every electronic control board, every capacitor, every wire connection in that air handler is aging faster than it would in a basement or a conditioned closet. That's simply physics — heat accelerates electronic and mechanical wear, full stop.
What Actually Kills AC Units Out Here

Compressor failure

In 100°F+ heat, capacitors degrade faster — heat is their enemy. A weak capacitor shows up as a hard-starting or humming outdoor unit, and a fully failed one means the whole system just sits there doing nothing. The contactor, a set of electrical contacts that switches power to the compressor, pits and burns from constant cycling and eventually welds shut or fails to close. Both are inexpensive parts, but ignored long enough, a bad capacitor takes the compressor down with it.
Coil corrosion and refrigerant leaks
Condenser coils mounted in a side yard near sprinklers or irrigation lines corrode from the inside out over years of mineral deposit exposure. We see this constantly in Sherman Oaks and Encino, where landscaping is lush and irrigation runs daily. Evaporator coils, sitting up in that hot attic air handler, develop pinhole leaks at solder joints from thermal cycling — heating up and cooling down thousands of times over a decade eventually fatigues copper joints. A slow refrigerant leak doesn't kill a system overnight, but it forces the compressor to work harder for years, shortening its life significantly.
Duct and airflow problems
A huge percentage of Valley homes, especially those built in the 1950s-70s in North Hollywood, Van Nuys, and Reseda, have original or poorly-sized ductwork. Undersized returns, crushed flex duct in the attic, and disconnected sections force the blower motor and compressor to work against restricted airflow. That extra strain shows up as premature blower motor bearing failure and, over time, a compressor that's running hotter and harder than it should be. If your ducts have never been evaluated, that's often a bigger lifespan factor than the equipment itself.
Repair or Replace: The Real Math
We use a simple rule with homeowners, and it holds up well: if the repair cost is more than 30-40% of the cost of a new system, and the unit is past 10 years old, replacement usually makes more financial sense. A compressor replacement alone can run $2,000-$3,500 in parts and labor; a full system replacement with a new coil and outdoor unit often isn't dramatically more once you're already paying for that labor and refrigerant.
Here's a straightforward comparison that comes up constantly. A 10-year-old, 10-SEER builder-grade system with a failed compressor is a bad repair candidate — old refrigerant type (likely R-22, which was phased out of production in 2020 and now costs a fortune per pound when you can even find it), low efficiency, and a coil that's probably close to its own end of life. Compare that to a 6-year-old, 16-SEER2 system with a bad capacitor — that's a $300-$500 repair on equipment that has another decade of useful life ahead of it. Age and refrigerant type matter as much as what specifically broke.
Older homes with R-22 systems deserve special mention. If your outdoor unit still uses R-22 ("Freon"), any refrigerant leak repair becomes financially painful because the refrigerant itself is scarce and expensive. As of 2023, federal minimum efficiency standards moved to SEER2 ratings, which are measured slightly differently than the old SEER numbers homeowners are used to seeing — a 14 SEER2 system isn't quite equivalent to old 14 SEER, so don't get confused comparing quotes across the change-over.
