Indoor Air Quality After LA Wildfires: What Actually Helps
We had a call last fall from a family in Sherman Oaks who'd sealed every window with painter's tape during the Mountain Fire smoke event, run three different tabletop air purifiers they'd grabbed from a big box store, and still woke up with headaches and that campfire smell soaked into their curtains. That's the thing about wildfire smoke in the San Fernando Valley — it doesn't respect a closed window. PM2.5 particles are small enough to work through door gaps, attic vents, and old duct seams that most homeowners never think about. We see this every week from Studio City to Burbank whenever a fire kicks up anywhere in the county, and the honest answer is: most of what people do to fix it doesn't move the needle. Here's what does.
Why LA Homes Are Particularly Bad at Keeping Smoke Out
Most homes in our service area were built between the 1950s and 1980s, long before anyone cared about building envelope tightness. Stucco walls, original single-pane or first-generation dual-pane windows, and — this is the big one — attics with open soffit vents and gable vents that were never designed to filter anything, just to move air. During a smoke event, wind pressure pushes particulate straight through those vents into the attic, and if your ductwork lives up there (it does in the vast majority of Valley homes), that smoke gets pulled right into your return air and distributed through every room.
We also see a lot of older homes where the return duct itself has gaps at the plenum connection or where flex duct has come loose from a takeoff. Under normal conditions that's a minor efficiency loss. During a smoke event, it's a direct pipeline for outdoor particulate into your supply air. If you've ever noticed you can smell smoke indoors worse in one room than another, an unsealed duct run near that room is usually why.
MERV Ratings: What the Number Actually Means for Smoke
This is where we field the most questions. A standard fiberglass filter that came with your furnace is MERV 4-ish and does almost nothing for combustion particulate — it's there to protect the blower motor from lint and dust bunnies, not your lungs. Wildfire smoke particles are mostly in the 0.4 to 2.5 micron range, and you need MERV 13 or higher to meaningfully capture that.
Here's the catch homeowners don't always hear from the guy selling filters at the hardware store: not every system can handle a MERV 13 filter. Older or undersized blower motors choke on the added static pressure, which drops airflow, makes the system work harder, and can shorten equipment life or trip a high-limit switch on a furnace. We've been called out to Toluca Lake and North Hollywood homes where someone upgraded their filter with good intentions and ended up with a system short-cycling or an evaporator coil icing over because airflow dropped too low.
The real fix isn't just buying a higher-rated filter — it's confirming your blower and duct system can actually support one. That's part of what we check during a Smart Care 21-point inspection: static pressure readings before and after a filter change, not guesswork.
What we recommend by situation
If your system was properly sized and installed with adequate return area, MERV 13 is usually fine and is the sweet spot for wildfire smoke without crushing airflow. If you've got an older, marginal system, MERV 11 with a slightly deeper filter (4-inch media filters breathe easier than 1-inch) is often the better real-world compromise. Either way, a 1-inch MERV 13 crammed into a return that was designed for MERV 8 is going to cause more problems than it solves.
Portable Air Purifiers vs. Whole-House Filtration: The Honest Comparison
Portable HEPA units have their place — a good one in a bedroom, running overnight, genuinely helps for the room it's in. But we want to be straight with people: a portable unit rated for 300 square feet is not going to clean the air in a 1,800 square foot single-story home, no matter how many hours it runs. It's treating a room, not a house.
Whole-house filtration through your existing HVAC ductwork uses your blower to keep pulling air through a high-MERV filter continuously, which cycles the entire home's air volume multiple times an hour if your system is sized right. The tradeoff is that it only filters when the system is running, which is why during heavy smoke events we tell people to run the fan on "on" instead of "auto" so it's continuously circulating and filtering, not just when there's a call for heat or cooling.
The realistic answer for most Encino, Valley Village, or Van Nuys households is both: whole-house filtration as the backbone, plus a portable HEPA unit in the bedroom where you're breathing all night. Standalone units in every room adds up to real money — often more than upgrading the home's actual filtration would cost — for worse results.
Duct Sealing and the Attic Problem Nobody Talks About
We've inspected a lot of attics after fire events, and it's common to find return plenums with visible daylight gaps, flex duct pulled loose at a boot, or mastic that's cracked and separated after 20-plus years of Valley heat cycles. None of that matters much on a clear day. During a smoke event, every one of those gaps is pulling attic air — the dirtiest air in the house — straight into your supply.
Duct sealing with mastic (not just tape, which fails within a few years in attic heat) is one of the highest-value, lowest-glamour fixes we do. It's not exciting work, but tightening up the duct system means your filtration actually filters the air going into your rooms instead of half of it bypassing the filter through a gap upstream.
If your ducts are original to a house built before the mid-90s, there's a decent chance they've never been pressure tested. We check this as part of a full system evaluation, and it's worth doing even outside of fire season — leaky ducts cost you money on every utility bill, not just during a smoke event.
What About Sealing the House Itself?
Weatherstripping doors, adding foam gaskets to attic access hatches, and closing the damper on any unused fireplace all genuinely help reduce infiltration. But there's a limit — LA building code (and just basic livability) requires some fresh air exchange, and a completely sealed house creates its own problems with humidity and indoor pollutant buildup from cooking, cleaning products, and off-gassing. We're not telling anyone to caulk every crack in the house.
What actually matters most: attic access panels (often just sitting on a ledge with no gasket at all), the gap around whole-house fan louvers if you have one, and door sweeps on exterior doors. Those three spots let in more particulate than people realize, and they're a couple hours of work, not a remodel.
Air Scrubbers, UV Lights, and Ionizers: What's Worth the Money
We get asked about add-on gadgets constantly, especially after a bad smoke week. Here's the straight version:
- UV-C lights installed at the coil help with mold and biological growth on the evaporator coil — they don't meaningfully affect wildfire particulate, which isn't biological.
- Ionizers and "needlepoint bipolar ionization" systems can help with some particle agglomeration, but the data on real-world smoke reduction is thin, and a few models have raised ozone output concerns. We don't push these as a smoke solution.
- Standalone carbon filtration stages help with the smoke smell — VOCs and odor compounds that a MERV filter alone won't touch. If lingering smoke smell after air quality returns to normal is your main complaint, activated carbon media is genuinely worth adding.
- A properly sized MERV 13 filter with sealed ducts and correct airflow beats all of the above combined for actual particulate removal, dollar for dollar.
If a company is trying to sell you a $2,000 ionizer add-on before they've checked your filter rating, your duct sealing, or your static pressure, that's a sign to get a second opinion.
What We Actually Check During a Smoke-Season Tune-Up
When we go out on an indoor air quality call after a fire event, this is the real sequence, not a sales pitch: we check filter MERV rating against what the system can actually support, measure static pressure to confirm airflow isn't being strangled, inspect the return plenum and visible duct runs for gaps or disconnected sections, check the blower fan settings and make sure the thermostat's fan mode is understood by the homeowner, and inspect attic access points and vent screening. Homeowners often ask what a realistic budget looks like. A quality 4-inch MERV 13 media cabinet retrofit typically runs a few hundred dollars installed if your system has the space and airflow to support it. Duct sealing on an average single-story home is more involved — usually a half-day to full-day job depending on attic access and how much duct needs resealing or replacing. Neither is a huge remodel-level expense, and both are permanent improvements that help every fire season going forward, not just this one.
When It's Time to Call Someone
