Turned out the "smart" schedule he set up was running the AC down to 68°F every afternoon because a geofence glitch thought someone was always home. He wasn't wrong to buy a smart thermostat. That changes which smart features are worth paying for. A thermostat that's brilliant at heating setback recovery isn't doing much for you in North Hollywood. A thermostat that's smart about avoiding unnecessary cooling runtime during a Santa Ana event, or one that can tell the difference between an empty house and an occupied one on a 95-degree afternoon, is worth real money. SCE's tiered rate structure also matters here — once you cross into Tier 2 or Tier 3 usage in summer, the cost per kWh jumps substantially, so shaving peak-hour AC runtime isn't a small thing. It's often the difference between staying in a lower tier all month or not.
The Features That Actually Move the Needle
Geofencing (done right)
Geofencing uses your phone's location to know when you've left the house and when you're coming back, adjusting the setpoint automatically. Done well, this is probably the single highest-value feature for LA homes, because so many households here have irregular schedules — freelance hours, entertainment industry shifts, kids' after-school activities all over the Valley. A fixed schedule thermostat can't adapt to that. Geofencing can. Adaptive/learning schedules

Ecobee's remote sensors and Nest's temperature sensors let the system average multiple rooms or prioritize the room you're actually in. That means the system isn't overcooling the whole house just to satisfy one hot room, which is a real, measurable reduction in runtime.
Time-of-use rate matching
If you're on an SCE or LADWP time-of-use plan, some thermostats (Ecobee in particular) let you set schedules that shift cooling load ahead of peak pricing windows. Pre-cooling at 11am when rates are lower, then coasting through the 4-9pm peak window with less compressor runtime, can shave a noticeable amount off summer bills. This only works if your system has the capacity to pre-cool effectively, which brings us to a compatibility issue we'll get into below.
Features That Sound Good But Rarely Pay Off Here
Not everything on the spec sheet is worth the upcharge. Humidity control and dehumidification modes, heavily marketed on some models, matter a lot in humid climates but barely register in LA's dry heat — we're just not fighting moisture the way Houston or Miami is. Weather-responsive "smart away" features that adjust based on outdoor forecast data sound great, but we've seen them cause more short-cycling than savings when the system reacts to every cloud passing over rather than actual indoor conditions. And frankly, voice assistant integration, while convenient, has zero impact on your utility bill — it's a lifestyle feature, not an efficiency one, and shouldn't be the reason you pick one thermostat over another.
Multi-week energy reports and "efficiency scores" inside the apps are also mostly for feel-good engagement. They don't save you anything on their own; they're just data. What actually saves money is the underlying scheduling logic and how well the thermostat is configured for your specific equipment, which is where a lot of DIY installs go sideways.
Compatibility Failures We See on Service Calls
The C-wire problem
A huge share of the service calls we get about "my smart thermostat isn't working right" trace back to a missing or improperly wired C-wire (common wire), which provides continuous power to the thermostat. Ecobee tends to be our default recommendation for larger single-family homes with uneven room temperatures, mainly because of the remote sensor system and better native support for multi-stage and dual-fuel heat pump setups. The tradeoff is a slightly steeper learning curve on initial setup, which is where a lot of the misconfiguration problems we mentioned above tend to happen with self-installs.
Honeywell's smart lineup (the T9 and T10 series) is a solid middle ground — reliable hardware, decent app, good multi-stage support — and tends to be the choice for customers who want smart features without deep integration into a broader smart-home ecosystem. For rental properties and ADUs, which we're installing HVAC in constantly across LA now given the ADU boom, Honeywell's simpler setup is often the more practical choice for landlords who don't want tenant confusion.

- Confirm you have a C-wire, or budget for one to be run — don't rely on a power extender kit as a permanent fix
- Know your equipment type exactly: single-stage, two-stage, variable-speed, heat pump, or dual-fuel
- Check your utility's current rebate program before buying, not after
- If your home has uneven room temps, prioritize a system with remote sensor support
- Set geofencing radius wider than your immediate neighborhood to avoid false triggers
- Don't buy based on humidity control or forecast-based features — they don't matter much in LA's climate
- Have a licensed tech verify staging and heat pump setup after install, even if you did the swap yourself
