Why Your AC Freezes Up (And What to Check Before You Call for Repair)
We got a call last July from a homeowner in Sherman Oaks whose system had been running fine all week, then suddenly started blowing warm air on a 104-degree afternoon. She went outside expecting to find a broken part. Instead she found the indoor coil wrapped in a solid sheet of ice, water dripping out of the air handler cabinet and onto the garage floor. That's one of the most common calls we get from June through September, and it's rarely the mystery it seems. A frozen coil is a symptom, not a diagnosis — and about half the time, the fix starts with something you can check yourself before you ever pick up the phone.
We've been running service calls across the Valley and greater LA since 2008, and freeze-ups follow a pattern we can usually spot within the first five minutes of looking at a system. Let's walk through why it happens, what's actually going on inside that coil, and what's worth trying before you spend money on a diagnostic visit.
What's Actually Happening Inside a Frozen Coil
Your indoor evaporator coil is supposed to run cold — typically between 35 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the refrigerant charge, the outdoor temperature, and the airflow moving across it. That's cold enough to pull humidity out of the air and drop the supply temperature, but it's not supposed to drop below freezing. When it does, moisture in the air condensing on the coil turns to frost instead of water, and that frost builds layer on layer until the whole coil is encased in ice.
Here's the mechanical problem that creates: once ice covers the coil fins, air can no longer pass through them. Airflow drops further, the coil gets even colder, and more ice forms. It's a feedback loop. Left alone long enough, the ice can spread up into the refrigerant lines and, in older systems, crack the coil itself from the expansion. That's a $1,200-plus repair instead of a service call, which is exactly why we tell people not to just crank the AC and wait it out.
The Real Causes We See on Service Calls Across LA
There are really only four root causes of a frozen coil, and in eight years of Smart Care inspections we can tell you which ones show up most in this climate.
1. Restricted airflow (the majority of our calls)
This is the one we find most, especially in homes in Van Nuys, Studio City, and North Hollywood with older duct systems or homeowners who haven't changed a filter in six months. If the filter is clogged, the blower can't push enough air across the coil to keep it warm enough. Residential systems need roughly 350–450 CFM per ton of cooling capacity. Drop below that and the coil temperature falls out of range fast. A dirty filter, closed supply registers, undersized return ducts, or a blower motor running at reduced speed can all cause this same restriction.
2. Low refrigerant charge
If your system is low on refrigerant — almost always because of a leak, not because refrigerant "runs out" on its own — the reduced pressure drops the coil temperature below the freezing point even with good airflow. This is the one homeowners can't fix themselves, and it's also the one with legal weight behind it now. Since the 2020 phase-down of R-22 and the newer 2025 transition rules affecting R-410A systems, refrigerant work has to be handled by an EPA Section 608–certified technician, and it has to be done right — venting refrigerant is a federal violation, and improperly recharging a leaking system just means you're back here again in three months.
3. A failing blower motor or capacitor
We test capacitors constantly in the summer heat because heat is what kills them. A run capacitor rated at 40/5 MFD that's drifted more than 6% out of spec will make the blower motor spin slower than it should, which quietly reduces airflow over months until one 100-degree day pushes it past the tipping point and the coil ices over.
4. Dirty coils and thermostat issues
A coil caked in dust and pet hair acts the same as a dirty filter — it blocks airflow at the source. And in rarer cases, we find a thermostat calling for cooling nonstop, or a system that's been set to run at night when outdoor temps drop into the 50s, both of which extend runtime long enough for frost to build even on a perfectly healthy system.
Airflow Problem or Refrigerant Leak? Here's How to Tell the Difference
Homeowners ask us this constantly, and there's a reasonably reliable way to tell before a technician ever shows up. An airflow-related freeze usually comes on gradually — weaker cooling for a day or two, then ice. A refrigerant leak freeze often comes with warm spots in certain rooms for weeks beforehand, a hissing or bubbling sound near the outdoor unit's line set, and oily residue at fitting connections, since refrigerant leaks typically carry a small amount of compressor oil with them.
Airflow problems are also usually fixable same-day and cheap — a $15 filter, a capacitor swap in the $180–$350 range, or clearing blocked vents. Refrigerant leaks are a different animal. Finding the leak point (often a coil pinhole, a Schrader valve, or a brazed joint that's failed) can take an hour of nitrogen pressure testing or electronic leak detection, and repairs range from $300 for a valve to $1,500+ for coil replacement, plus the cost of the refrigerant charge itself, which has climbed noticeably since 410A supply tightened under the EPA's AIM Act phase-down schedule.
What to Do Before You Call for Repair
Before you assume the worst, there's a sequence worth running through. This is exactly what we walk people through on the phone before we ever dispatch a truck, because half the time it saves an unnecessary visit.
- Turn the system off completely — not just to a higher temperature, but off at the thermostat — and switch the fan to "on" so it runs continuously without the compressor. This alone can thaw a moderately iced coil in 1–3 hours.
- Check and replace the air filter. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, that's your answer.
- Walk the house and make sure no supply vents are closed or blocked by furniture, rugs, or boxes — we find closed vents in nurseries and home offices constantly.
- Look at the outdoor condenser fan — is it spinning? If the fan's dead but the compressor is running, that's a different failure entirely and needs a technician.
- Check the condensate drain line for a clog once the ice melts; a backed-up line often overflows right as the ice thaws, which can look like a new leak but usually isn't.
- Once thawed, run the system for 15–20 minutes and feel the supply air. If it's blowing cold and strong, airflow was likely the issue and you've bought yourself time. If it ices again within a few hours, stop running it — that points to refrigerant.
Never try to chip ice off the coil manually. Coil fins are aluminum, spaced at roughly 12–14 fins per inch, and they bend or tear with almost no pressure. We've replaced coils that were otherwise fine because someone took a butter knife to them trying to speed up the thaw.
When It's Time to Stop Troubleshooting and Call a Pro
If the system re-freezes after a clean filter change and clear vents, if you hear hissing near the line set, if the outdoor unit's fan isn't turning, or if this is the second freeze-up in the same season — those are all signs you're past the DIY stage. Running a system with a suspected leak repeatedly isn't just ineffective, it accelerates compressor wear. Compressors aren't designed to run with low charge; the reduced refrigerant flow also reduces the oil circulating to lubricate the compressor internals, and a $250 refrigerant fix ignored for a season can turn into a $2,500–$4,000 compressor replacement.
This is also where licensing matters more than people think. In Los Angeles, refrigerant handling, any brazing work, and electrical work tied to HVAC systems legally require a licensed contractor — that's separate from whether your work needs a permit. Full system replacements (not repairs) do require an LADBS permit and, if ductwork is modified, HERS testing for Title 24 energy compliance, which checks refrigerant charge and airflow as part of the sign-off. We handle that paperwork on installs as a matter of course; it's not optional in this county, and skipping it can come back to bite you at resale when the buyer's inspector asks for permit records.
What This Actually Costs, In Real Numbers
People want ballparks, so here they are, based on what we quote across LA. A filter and airflow correction: usually $0–$150 if it's a filter or blocked vent, up to $350 if a blower capacitor or motor is involved. A refrigerant leak repair: $300–$600 for a fitting or valve, $800–$1,800 for a coil replacement including labor and refrigerant charge, more if the system uses the newer, pricier refrigerants. A diagnostic visit itself, if nothing else is bundled in, typically runs $89–$149 depending on the company and time of year — expect it to run higher during a heat wave when every AC company in the Valley is slammed.
If you're already looking at coil replacement on a system that's 10+ years old, it's worth having a real conversation about whether a full system replacement makes more sense than patching an aging unit, especially with SEER2 minimum efficiency standards now in effect and older 13-SEER systems running noticeably higher electric bills during LA's longer, hotter summers than they did a decade ago.
How Regular Maintenance Prevents This Entirely
Almost every freeze-up we get called out for traces back to something that would've been caught in a routine tune-up.
